Open Studio
KONG Vollak
6:30-7:30pm Monday, Sept 12
SA SA BASSAC
18 2nd Floor, Sothearos Blvd

Invited as the first local artist-in-residence at SA SA BASSAC, Kong Vollak will transform the public gallery into a private studio from August 25-September 25 (open on Saturdays to the public). Invited by curator Erin Gleeson to work directly on the gallery walls, the artist will reconsider his practice according to the expansion of space and ephemeral nature of the project, which will be painted over after the exhibition period.

On Monday evening, 12 September from 6.30-7.30, visit the artist in his studio for a Q+A session about his process and thoughts midway through his residency. Peek into his working environment of scaffolding and ladders as Kong plans and constructs his reflection on the built environment that is Phnom Penh. Typically working in graphite, charcoal, and ink on paper and canvas, Kong's work reflects his ambivalence about the city's rapid urbanization process, which, he says, "seems alive and endless."

OPEN LIBRARY: In 2011, SA SA BASSAC initiated the first public library in Cambodia to focus on art. Housed at SA SA BASSAC gallery and resource center, the small but growing collection is accessible on the premises during opening hours and by appointment. We welcome your visit and encourage your donation!
